VEGAN CHEESE

Tesco dairy free vegan cheese

Tesco have recently extended their free from range and it now includes a whole host of dairy free vegan cheeses. Naturally I bought as many as I could get my hands on because cheese is life.

Cheese is one of the things I struggle the most with as a transitioning vegan. I've not missed meat or eggs and there are so many chocolate alternatives that I've hardly missed my beloved Dairy Milk, but cheese is my one downfall.  It's not something I'll buy in at home but when I'm eating out, its so easy to opt for the veggie options rather than creating a fuss about a vegan dish (something I'm getting braver with doing!), plus some diary free cheeses can be pretty bad!

Seeing these new vegan cheeses which I could buy in my local supermarket, made me so excited! I got a smoked cheese, a blue cheese and the chilli cheese. I have to say, the one thing that puts me off these is the smell. They're made from coconut oil so they have a very artificial smell. However I think it's something I'm just going to have to get used to as I really do like these cheeses!

The jalaepeno and chilli has so much flavour and the texture is spot on, I'd love to have this grated over a vegan chilli or even melted on a toastie! However, the blue cheese is a slightly disappointing one for me as dairy blue cheese was a real favourite of mine, so I don't know that I'll be picking this one up again.

A firm favourite of the bunch has to be the smoked cheese, they've really got everything right with this one! There's nothing about it that I feel as though I would have to mask by hiding it in a meal, I would quite happily eat this with crackers, or just by itself!

I'm so glad my gorgeous cheese board and knives won't be going to waste now!

Have you tried any of these alternatives, or have you found better dairy free cheeses? Let me know!

  1. I'm not vegan, but I love posts like this! I really like knowing what's out there and trying new things, plus I like to serve my vegan and vegetarian readers on my own blog too. I've done nutritional yeast, hummus (in sauces) and cashews as cheese replacement, but I've been hesitant on the store-bought vegan cheeses... You've inspired me to go ahead and try :)

  13. I have only tried the chilli cheese from this range so far, and i totally get what you mean about the artifical smell. I'm not sure i'd like blue cheese, but the smoked one sounds good! Have you tried any good philly alternatives yet? Really craving the chive flavour to top my bagels.
